Patricia Ashman, Women's Engineering Society (WES)
From Entry to Legacy: Keeping Women in Engineering – and the Role of Male Allies 2.45-3pm
The conversation about women in engineering often focuses on barriers to entry—but what happens after they get in? Too often, talented women leave the profession due to environments that fail to evolve with their needs, the so called leaky pipeline. This session moves beyond the usual conversation which revolves around how we attract women into engineering and instead asks: How do we nurture and retain women in engineering for the long term?
We’ll explore strategies for supporting women at every career stage—whether returning after maternity leave, navigating menopause, or simply finding workplaces that adapt to different needs.
What does a truly inclusive and supportive work environment look like? How do we design spaces and policies that enable women to build long, fulfilling careers in engineering?
Crucially, this isn’t just a women’s issue—men play a vital role as allies in shaping the culture of engineering. We’ll discuss how male colleagues, leaders, and mentors can actively support gender-inclusive workplaces, challenge biases, and advocate for meaningful change.
Let’s shift the focus from recruitment to retention and discuss how we can create engineering workplaces where women don’t just survive but thrive—with the support of an industry that values all forms of diversity and everyone’s contribution and potential.

BIOGRAPHY: Patricia is a mechanical engineer with a diverse global career spanning the Automotive, Rail, and Steel industries. She now brings her expertise and experience to her academic leadership role within the School of Engineering at Coventry University. Her focus is on developing industry-ready graduates equipped to tackle the grand challenges of our time. These include renewable energy, sustainability, artificial intelligence, clean water, and more. Her expertise lies in future mobility and transport, with a special interest in addressing the ethical challenges of our rapidly transforming society.
